1% Well-Read Challenge

I've decided to join in the 1% Well-Read Challenge this year. The idea is to read 10 books from the 1001 books you must read before you die list, ie 1%. Unfortunately the editors have updated the book and so there are now three options:

  1. Read 10 titles from the original list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
  2. Read 10 titles from the new list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.
  3. Read 13 titles from the combined list (of almost 1300 titles) from March 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. In other words, “What were they thinking dropping titles from Dostoevsky and Jane Austen?”
I'm going to choose option 3. I've had a look through the lists and I've already read 26 of the books which makes me 2% well-read. My list for the challenge (tentative):

  1. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - Mark Haddon
  2. Atonement - Ian McEwen
  3. The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
  4. Get Shorty - Elmore Leonard
  5. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote
  6. Rabbit, Run - John Updike
  7. Pippi Longstocking - Astrid Lindgen
  8. A Passage to India - E.M. Forster
  9. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll
  10. One Thousand and One Nights - Anon
  11. Water Babies - Charles Kingsley
  12. North and South - Elizabeth Gaskell
  13. City of God - E.L. Doctorow
